Duke Crew has gone Google! At least for our new photos. Pictures! We have uploaded both pictures and videos from a practice last year, as well as new pictures from the Mid Atlantic Erg Sprints. The videos are duplicates of what was found on the gargantoa YouTube page, but we are working to streamline the whole process to find everything in once place. Please send suggestions, requests, ideas, complaints or money to kasey.geibel@duke.edu

In case you have missed the updates, videos from practice last fall can be found here or by clicking on the Practice Video link to the left; we will hopefully update pictures and results from this weekend soon.

Duke Mens Crew is back at it again, and everyone knows that this time of year that means we are on the Erg. Two weeks ago we competed at the Mid Atlantic Erg Sprints, and either by luck of placement or just pure skill, Duke was able to make a sweep of the Collegiant 500m Sprint, with Kasey Geibel, Spencer Li and Adam Orr taking first through third places. This weekend we are headed to Charlotte for the Scrambled Erg indoor Regatta, where we hope to see much of our local competition. Due to the nice weather we have been having, we will be headed out to Lake Michie on Sunday for our first water practice of the year; if we are lucky, we will be able to be on the water a few days a week through February. The schedule has been updated, so take a look at where we are headed this spring. Official results from the Mid Atlantic Erg sprints can be found here.

January 30, 2009

The spring semester is off to a start on the ergs, and we are headed to DC tomorrow for our first of two indoor meets. We welcome our new novice rowers Lyle, Adam, Kia and William. In news from the boathouse, we have sold a four and are picking up a new one, meaning that we are naming more boats this season. If you have suggestions for what we should do, send an email to kasey.geibel@duke.edu . Look for updates to our spring schedule soon.

November 4, 2008

We competed two weeks ago in the Head of the Tennessee for the first time, and were able to pass a couple of boats during the race to a sixth place finish of ten teams, just missing Alabamba by less than a second, and less than a minute behind first place Barry College. Last weekend we were at the Head of the South, where due to a string of unfortunate equipment incidents, we finished much slower than we anticipated. We are looking forward to this weekends' regatta at Augusta, and expect close competition between us, Alabama and Clemson yet again.
We have finished with the naming raffle for our new Resolute, and the new name is the Dangerfield. We look forward to christening our new boat this spring, with the start of the sprint season. Images are now uploaded from the Tennessee, and we hope to have other images soon. .

April 21, 2008

We purchased a Resolute 4+ last season with fundraising money, but it still unnamed. We're holding a raffle, and for each tax deductible donation of $200, we will enter you for a chance to name our boat! This offer is open to anyone who is interested, not just alumni. The entry form is here. For any questions, email Congyi Wu.

On the topic of alumni, here is the '86 Lightweight 8 at the Governor's Cup (sent in by former Alumnus Marc Seinfeld).

The rose sale went well and we managed to sell and deliver all of our roses. Great job to all of the rowers and coxswains that helped table for, package, and deliver these things. For the 150+ individuals who supported our team by ordering roses, thanks!

February 2, 2007

We have started our first fundraiser of the year, a rose sale. We made a bulk order of 450 roses, and will be delivering them on Valentine's day. We've already been tabling for two weeks, and it looks like our fundraiser will be a success. If we sell out, we will have 3 new ergs to train with!

January 10, 2007

The new racing schedule for the semester is up.

The team just returned from the University of Tampa after a terrific spring break. Pae Wu, Scott Pritchard, and Sophie Evans handled coaching for the week. After a week of intense training, the team went to Winter Park, Florida, for the Rollins Tri-Meet. Congratulations to the varsity lightweight 4, the varsity open 4, and the novice 8 for taking the gold in their respective events.

The team had a strong showing at the Augusta/Aiken County Regatta a week later, with the varsity lightweight 4 placing 1st, the varsity heavyweight 4 placing 2nd, and the novice 8 coming in 3rd in their respective events. More detailed results are on the results page.

Congratulations to our new officers: Ben Kamens - President, Greg Fleizach - Vice President, Carl Hulit - Treasurer, Travis Richardson - Secretary, Andrew Cheeseman and Joel Mitchell - equipment commodores, and Will Fleming - webmaster.

March 2003

After a delayed start to the spring, the team headed down to Tampa for a week of intense training at the University of Tampa. Mike Stahlman (Wisconsin '02) and Clay Kaiser (Duke '02) split coaching duties for the week. Training included two water practices a day and supplementary runs and ab circuits as well as mixed rows between the varsity team and the novice team. Training concluded with an afternoon in the sun at Clearwater Beach before the team traveled to Elberton, Georgia for SERCs. There the V8+ took first in its heat and second to Georgia Tech in the finals. V8+ The lightweight 4+ finished second in its finals-only race. The Novice A 8+ took 5th overall while the Novice B 8+ took 4th in its heat. The team is looking forward to racing UNC this weekend in a best of three dual. More complete results can be found at www.row2k.com.

February 2003

The men will return to water training as soon as possible considering the unusually cold weather we've been having this season.

January 2003

The Duke Men help an all-team meeting upon returning to Durham from Winter Break. There they laid down their goals for the spring season, among them to show 2 novice 8+s and a Varsity 8+ in grand finals at SIRAs and have another successful showing at SERCs at the conclusion of our annual spring break trip.

December 2002

Congratulations to new officers: Jimmy Zimmer, President; Roman Ptakowski (sp?), Vice-President; Kevin Krauth, Treasurer; Emily Ballard, Secretary. Also, congratulations to Ben Kamens and Greg Fleizach, our new equipment commodores. Thanks to our out-going officers Drake Guenther, Trip Walker, and Andrew Schultz for all their hard work this year.

Ice Storm Strikes Triangle. As you may have heard, the Durham area was struck by a massive snow and ice storm just before Winter Break. Most of Durham was without electricity and heat as fallen trees struck powerlines and blocked roads. Out at Lake Michie, the site of our winter storage, three boats were damaged. The stern half of a Dirigo 8+, the Ragnarok, was severely damaged. Two 4+s, the Hermes and Thomas Eppinger received relatively minor damages but are still in need of repair. Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.

November 2002

After a good showing at this year's Head of the Hooch, the team made the transition into winter training. The schedule includes aerobic/anarobic training 6 days a week and supplemental weight lifting.

October 2002

New Oar Purchase. With the help of team fundraising, alumni donations, and a subsity from the Club Sport's Office, the team was able to purchase a set of new Concept II oars. The new oars feature composite (plastic) grips, a newly designed oarlock, and Vortex edges. The team first got a chance to use them at the Head of the Hooch in early November.

October 2001

Over Fall Break, the team went to Occoquan, VA and competed in the Occoquan Chase. The Men's 4's placed 3rd, 5th, and 11th out of 17 teams present. The novice 4 also did tremedously well with a second place finish, beating out UVA by a second.

September 2001

Duke Men swept Carolina in the season's first competition. The weather was a bit windy, however, the varsity 8 won by just 4 seconds over a quick UNC boat and the Charles 4 beat out UNC's top boat.

The John Paul Hawley, Sr. that was donated by the Guenther family was christened this weekend to become the newest member of Duke's fleet. The boat has begun its career with a victory over UNC, a great way to start.
